How Gong went to market
Gong sold conversation intelligence to sales leaders, converting 11 of 12 design partners to paid, and became known through research drawn from recorded calls. In 2019 it renamed the category revenue intelligence to reach the chief revenue officer, backed it with events and Super Bowl ads, then expanded across products and teams past $500M ARR by 2026.

Publish research from calls
Gong analyses conversations recorded on its platform and publishes the findings for sellers.[3]
Sellers share it socially
Sales audiences tag colleagues and argue in the comments on LinkedIn, the channel Gong chose for that reason.[20]
Pitch the CRO a category
The pitch names revenue intelligence so the chief revenue officer cannot delegate it.[19]
Custom per-user proposal
Sales prepares a proposal priced per user plus a platform fee.[17]
Expand to adjacent teams
Use spreads from sales to RevOps, enablement, success, support, and services.[12]
More data, more research
More customers and teams mean more conversations for the next study.[3]

01The phases
PrimarySupportingTried, then dropped
2015 to 2018
Conversation intelligence, design partners, data content
Gong validated the idea with sales leaders, charged its beta design partners, and used a category name rivals had already chosen. Research drawn from the calls it recorded made the company known.
- Sales-led
Gong interviewed about 50 potential buyers, ran a beta with 12 design partners, then asked for a paid order in the tens of thousands, and 11 of the 12 bought. Early buyers were startups; very large companies started arriving almost in the second year.[18],[19]
- Inbound content
From 2016 Gong published findings from the sales conversations it analysed, written by former salespeople, such as a 2017 study of over 519,000 call recordings. Its chief evangelist credits that content, with the product and events, for making Gong known.[3],[2],[19]
- Sales-led
2019 to 2022
Naming revenue intelligence, selling to the CRO
Gong renamed its category revenue intelligence to escape comparison with call-recording tools and to reach the chief revenue officer, then promoted the category above its own brand through a podcast, a summit, a customer conference, and local Super Bowl ads.
- Category creation
In 2019 Gong decided it had outgrown conversation intelligence and named revenue intelligence, a word aimed at the chief revenue officer. For two years its advertising set revenue intelligence in a much bigger font, powered by Gong.[19],[8],[18]
- Sales-led
The rename served the sale: budget did not exist for conversation intelligence, so Gong needed the CRO, who heard the old name as a tactical tool for enablement. Pricing is a customized proposal, per user plus a platform fee.[19],[17]
- Owned events
The Revenue Intelligence Summit became the customer event, Celebrate. Gong ran a sold-out US roadshow in February 2020, a virtual conference that spring, and an annual conference, #celebrate20, with customer awards.[19],[4],[5],[18]
- Inbound content
Data-driven research posts continued, with LinkedIn picked as the main social channel because sales audiences tagged and argued there more than on Twitter or Facebook. One of the best performing pieces found that reps who swear on calls have an 8% higher win rate.[20],[19]
- Paid acquisition
Gong bought local Super Bowl airtime in 2021 (Bay Area, New York, Seattle) and 2022 (Bay Area, Chicago, Boston) aimed at sales leaders. Gong says the ad helped create its biggest-ever sales pipeline; it gives no figure.[6],[9],[10]
- Category creation
2023 to 2024
Platform across the revenue organisation
Gong positioned its platform as something companies consolidate on, tied wider internal use to faster revenue growth in its own customer data, and kept adding new logos under the revenue intelligence label.
- Land and expand
Gong described companies consolidating on its platform, and reported that across 332 customers, those using Gong throughout the organization saw 11% higher revenue growth year over year. Market intelligence was already drawing product and marketing teams by 2020.[11],[18]
- Sales-led
Nearly 1,000 customers chose Gong as their revenue intelligence platform in the first seven months of 2023, taking the total past 4,000.[11]
- Land and expand
2025 to now
Revenue AI OS, enterprise expansion, marketplace
Gong renamed its category again, to Revenue AI and then an AI operating system for revenue teams. Multi-product use doubled, adoption spread beyond sales, and large enterprise accounts accelerated.
- Land and expand
Multi-product use rose from one in four customers in March 2025 to half in May 2026, use spread to RevOps, enablement, success, support, and services, and Gong added more $1M+ customers in two quarters than in the previous six.[12],[13]
- Sales-led
Growth is described in enterprise terms: half of the Fortune 10 are now Gong customers.[13]
- Category creation
The category moved from revenue intelligence to Revenue AI and then the AI operating system for revenue teams, which Gong calls a category shift with itself as the standard.[12],[13],[19]
- Owned events
Celebrate '26 in Las Vegas served as the launch venue for new products, with customer stories on stage.[15],[16]
- Cloud marketplace
In July 2026 Gong listed on Microsoft Marketplace so enterprises can buy against Azure Consumption Commitments. No result is reported yet.[14]

03Myth checks
“Gong grew on LinkedIn content alone.”
Partly trueLinkedIn was real and deliberate: the CMO says Gong chose it because sales audiences engaged there, and data-driven research was the content it pushed. But the same leaders describe paid design partners, a sales motion aimed at the CRO, a category podcast and summit, roadshows, and Super Bowl ads Gong credits with its biggest-ever pipeline.[20],[19],[18],[10],[4]
“Gong is a call recorder.”
Partly trueRecording was the entry point: in 2017 Gong described itself as recording, transcribing, and analyzing sales calls, and the CEO says it started with voice because it was the richest data. But the 2019 rename was made to escape comparison with recording tools, and by 2026 half of customers run multiple products, with Engage, Forecast, and Enable driving expansion.[1],[18],[19],[13]

Answer on the 2016 beta
“I think that first, you can't really create a category, right? Just technically. You can help it happen.”
Amit Bendov, Co-founder and CEO, Gong[18]
Answer to "how do you just say, okay, this is our category?"
“We created a lot of valuable content that people found extremely valuable regardless of whether they used our product or not.”

04What other companies can take from it
Rename the category when the current name sends you to the wrong budget.
Works when: The economic buyer sits one or two levels above the daily user, the product touches a metric in that buyer's title, and the existing category name was chosen by earlier, narrower rivals.
Backfires when: Buyers already have a budget line under the old name, so a new name forces them to justify a new line item, or the product cannot yet deliver the wider promise the new name makes.

Turn the data your product collects into research your buyer's team wants to share.
Works when: The product sees aggregate behaviour across many customers that no single customer can see, customers have agreed to anonymised aggregate use, and the findings are practical for a large professional audience.
Backfires when: The data set is small or skewed toward a few customers, contracts forbid aggregate use, or the audience is too small for findings to travel socially.
Based on: Conversation intelligence, design partners, data content, Inbound content; Naming revenue intelligence, selling to the CRO, Inbound content
Ask design partners for real money early, and sell the price to a leader.
Works when: ACV is high enough that a free pilot gives no signal, and the buyer is a department head with discretionary budget.
Backfires when: The product needs bottom-up adoption before anyone with budget will look, so a paid ask stalls the pilots that would create the champion.
Based on: Conversation intelligence, design partners, data content, Sales-led
Expand by product into adjacent teams after the first team is standardised.
Works when: The first product creates a shared data layer that adjacent teams such as RevOps, success, and enablement can reuse without new integration.
Backfires when: Each new product needs its own data capture and its own buyer, so it is a second company rather than an expansion.

What changes in the AI era, and what to do now
Analysis by Deepak Gupta. This is opinion built on the sourced record above, not part of it.[13],[15],[12],[14]
Still works
- Proprietary aggregate data. Gong's own investors frame the advantage as the data and real-world context underneath the product, and analysis suggests original research from first-party data is one of the few content types answer engines cannot synthesise from public pages.
- Owned events with customers on stage, such as Celebrate '26, which do not depend on search traffic (analysis).
Breaks
- Analysis: the blog-post route to that research weakens when an AI answer quotes the statistic without the click.
- A category name built for 2019 loses meaning once every CRM vendor ships AI on calls, which shows in Gong's own two renames since 2025. Analysis: call transcription bundled by meeting platforms makes the call recorder label more damaging than it was.
What replaces it
- Analysis: research published as citable, dated findings with methods stated, so AI answers attribute them.
- Category language tied to an outcome the CRO owns, as in Gong's Revenue AI operating system positioning.
- Buying paths inside platforms where enterprises already hold committed spend, such as Microsoft Marketplace against Azure Consumption Commitments.

If you are
A Series A or B B2B SaaS company selling to a department leader at $20K to $100K ACV, where the product captures activity data across many customers
- Write down which budget owner your current category name sends you to, and test a name built around the metric in the CRO's, CISO's, or CFO's title.
- Publish one anonymised, aggregate finding a month from product data, written by a former practitioner of the buyer's job.
- Pick the one social channel where your buyers already tag colleagues on your posts, brief every employee to engage there, and drop the others.
- Run a category-named event or roadshow before you run a company-named conference.
You will know it works when: Share of first meetings held with the economic buyer rather than the end-user team, and the number of inbound demo requests that cite a specific research finding.

A growth-stage platform with a first team standardised on your product and a second product shipped, selling to enterprises
- Report multi-product adoption as a headline company metric internally, the way Gong reports it publicly.
- Package the second product for the adjacent team that already reads the first product's data.
- List on the cloud marketplace where your largest accounts hold committed spend.
- Use the annual customer conference to launch products, with customers presenting results on stage.
