How Anthropic went to market

Anthropic launched Claude in 2023 as an API for businesses plus a chat interface, framed by published safety policies. In 2024 it opened self-serve API signup and added Google Cloud next to Amazon Bedrock. In 2025 it released Claude Code and built enterprise sales, and by 2026 it sold through three clouds and a funded partner network.

A first use case grows into wider integrations and larger spend.[27]

  6. Partners take it to production

Systems integrators and certified partners run large deployments.[28]

01The phases

PrimarySupportingTried, then dropped

  1. 2021 to 2023

    Safety lab ships an API

A company that said it would concentrate on research launched Claude in March 2023 as an API for selected businesses plus a chat interface, framed by a published safety position, and had it on Amazon Bedrock by September 2023.

    • Developer-led

Claude launched through an API and developer console after a closed alpha with partners including Notion, Quora, and DuckDuckGo. By July 2023 Anthropic said it was working with thousands of businesses using the Claude API.[2],[3]

    • Sales-led

Early API access was gated behind a request form and a follow-up from the company, not open signup.[2]

    • Brand narrative

The 2021 Series A post framed the company around building more reliable AI systems. Claude was introduced as based on research into helpful, honest, and harmless AI, and in September 2023 Anthropic published a Responsible Scaling Policy. The Amazon announcement described the models as safe and steerable.[1],[2],[5],[6]

    • Cloud marketplace

By September 2023 enterprises were building with Claude on Amazon Bedrock, and Anthropic said it was expanding that support based on AWS customer demand.[6]

    • Product-led

A public beta chat website, claude.ai, opened with Claude 2 in July 2023. Claude Pro followed in September at $20 a month in the US or £18 in the UK, for 5x more usage.[3],[4]

  2. 2024 to 2025

Self-serve API, two clouds, plans for work

With Claude 3 the API opened to self-serve signup in 159 countries, Claude went generally available on Google Cloud's Vertex AI alongside Bedrock, and the chat product added Team and Enterprise plans, the latter sold through a sales team.

    • Developer-led

In March 2024 the API became generally available in 159 countries so developers could sign up and start immediately. In February 2025 Anthropic said Sonnet had been the preferred model for developers since June 2024.[7],[13]

    • Cloud marketplace

Claude 3 shipped on Bedrock and in preview on Vertex AI, then went generally available on Vertex AI two weeks later, pitched on keeping data and governance inside the customer's existing cloud. By November 2024 Anthropic said tens of thousands of companies used Claude through Bedrock.[7],[8],[12]

    • Product-led

A self-serve Team plan at $30 per user per month with a five-seat minimum launched in May 2024 with an iOS app. A free Android app followed in July.[9],[10]

    • Sales-led

The Enterprise plan added SSO, role-based permissions, and admin tooling, and was started by contacting the sales team.[11]

  3. 2025 to 2025

Claude Code and the enterprise build-out

Anthropic released Claude Code, made it generally available in May 2025, bundled it into paid plans and enterprise seats, and built a commercial organisation for enterprise and international sales, while adding Microsoft as a third cloud.

    • Developer-led

Claude Code began as an internal terminal tool whose first version was built by Boris Cherny, now Head of Claude Code, and he says its use spread quickly inside Anthropic. It was released as a limited research preview in February 2025 and fully launched in May 2025 with VS Code, JetBrains, and GitHub Actions support. Cherny says it was not initially a hit and took many months for users to understand.[13],[17],[19],[37]

    • Product-led

Claude Code is included in the individual Pro plan. From August 2025 Team and Enterprise customers could upgrade to premium seats that include Claude Code, with self-serve seat purchase and allocation in the admin panel.[32],[18],[19]

    • Sales-led

Anthropic appointed its first Chief Commercial Officer and a regional leadership team to drive enterprise sales expansion across key markets. The CEO says Claude Code and Claude for Enterprise are sold to enterprises as well as individual developers.[21],[34]

    • Land and expand

Accounts with over $100,000 in run-rate revenue grew nearly 7x in the year to September 2025. A customer quoted by Anthropic says bundling Claude for Enterprise with Claude Code led to a rollout to hundreds of developers.[19],[18]

    • Cloud marketplace

In November 2025 Claude arrived on Microsoft Foundry, eligible for Azure consumption commitments and existing Azure billing. Anthropic said this made Claude the only frontier model on all three of the most prominent cloud services.[24],[23]

    • Partner channel

Deloitte and Anthropic set up a certification program for 15,000 Deloitte professionals, and about 30,000 Accenture professionals were to receive training on Claude.[22],[26]

    • Owned events

Anthropic held its first developer conference, Code with Claude, on May 22, 2025 in San Francisco.[16]

    • Education

Claude for Education launched with campus-wide access at Northeastern, LSE, and Champlain College, a Claude Campus Ambassadors program, and API credits for student projects.[15]

    • Brand narrative

The Chief Commercial Officer, Paul Smith, describes safety and trust as fundamental to everything Anthropic builds.[21]

  4. 2026 to now

    Partner network, three clouds, expansion

With run-rate revenue past $47 billion by May 2026, Anthropic funded a partner network, co-founded a services company for mid-sized firms, deepened cloud procurement paths, and relied on expansion inside existing accounts.

    • Partner channel

In March 2026 Anthropic committed an initial $100 million to the Claude Partner Network for 2026 and said it would scale its partner-facing team fivefold. In May 2026 it announced a new enterprise AI services company with Blackstone, Hellman & Friedman, and Goldman Sachs.[28],[30]

    • Cloud marketplace

Anthropic says over 100,000 customers run Claude on Amazon Bedrock and that the full Claude Platform will be available inside AWS under the same account, controls, and billing. Claude is also on Vertex AI and Foundry.[29],[27]

    • Land and expand

Anthropic says businesses that start with Claude for a single use case expand their integrations across the organisation. Customers spending over $1 million a year went from a dozen to over 500 in two years.[27]

    • Brand narrative

The CEO ties the company's long focus on safety and reliability to its enterprise focus, which he describes as a better fit with enterprises than with consumers.[35],[36]

    • Usage pricing

Enterprise is priced at $20 per seat per month plus usage billed at API rates, and admins can enable extra usage for individual users at standard API rates.[32],[18]

    • Sales-assist

Enterprise can be started self-serve or through sales for a tailored quote.[32]

    • Product-led

Anthropic reports a sharp rise in consumer usage across its free, Pro, and Max tiers in 2026, which it says affected reliability during peak hours.[29]

    • Owned events

Code with Claude became a three-city series in San Francisco, London, and Tokyo with livestreams. The event page says demand outpaced the room.[33]

03Myth checks

  • “Anthropic is mainly a consumer chatbot company.”

    Not supported

The CEO says Anthropic chose to pursue the enterprise business and puts the split at roughly 80/20 on the enterprise side. Its funding posts attribute growth to enterprises and developers. Consumer apps exist and consumer usage rose sharply in 2026, so the consumer business is real but secondary by the company's own account.[35],[27],[34],[29]

  • “Anthropic sells only through AWS.”

    Not supported

Amazon is Anthropic's primary cloud provider and training partner, and Bedrock is a large channel. But Anthropic has sold its own API self-serve since March 2024, is generally available on Google Cloud's Vertex AI and Microsoft Foundry, sells Claude plans through its own sales team, and runs a partner network of consultancies.[7],[8],[24],[23],[27],[11],[28]

What changes in the AI era, and what to do now

Analysis by Deepak Gupta. This is opinion built on the sourced record above, not part of it.[24],[29],[35],[32],[28],[30],[33]

Still works

  • Procurement through existing cloud agreements. Anthropic's Foundry and AWS paths both run on the customer's current billing and contracts.
  • A trust narrative aimed at enterprise and regulated buyers, which the CEO links directly to the enterprise focus. Anthropic is itself the AI-native vendor in most of its markets, so its motions show what works under AI conditions more than what AI breaks. This is analysis.

Breaks

  • Flat consumer subscriptions under heavy use. Anthropic says consumer growth affected reliability and performance for free, Pro, Max, and Team users at peak hours, so capacity, not demand, limits how far a free tier can serve as a funnel.

What replaces it

  • Seat plus usage pricing at API rates in place of pure seats.
  • A funded partner network and a co-founded services company alongside a direct enterprise sales team.
  • First-party developer events alongside the API documentation channel.

If you are

A seed to Series B AI infrastructure or API company selling to enterprises, ACV $50K and up, product consumed programmatically

  1. Ship a self-serve API with public per-unit pricing so developers can start without a call.
  2. List on at least one cloud marketplace where your target buyers hold committed spend, and make the listing count against that commitment.
  3. Add an enterprise tier with SSO, SCIM, and audit logs behind a contact-sales path once self-serve accounts with company domains appear.
  4. Track accounts over a spend threshold, such as $100K annualised, as the core expansion metric.

You will know it works when: Count of accounts over the spend threshold quarter over quarter, and the share of new revenue billed through cloud marketplaces.

If you are

A company that owns a model, engine, or platform and is building its first developer tool, priced under $1K a seat to start

  1. Get the tool into daily internal use and chart internal daily active users before any external launch.
  2. Release externally as a labelled research preview to early adopters, and plan for a slow start.
  3. Bundle the tool into existing paid plans instead of selling it separately at first.
  4. Offer team admins premium seats with usage controls once companies adopt it bottom up.

You will know it works when: Weekly active users of the tool, and the number of team or enterprise accounts that upgrade seats to include it.
