How Canva went to market

Canva launched a free web editor in 2013 and grew through search landing pages that opened straight into templates, word of mouth, and translation into 100 languages. Paid Pro plans followed in 2015, then team plans, free classroom access, and from 2024 an enterprise offer that consolidates usage already inside large companies.

  1. Searches for a design

Someone searches for a design job and lands on a matching Canva landing page.[39]

  2. Designs free from template

The landing page opens the free editor with a template ready to edit.[39]

  3. Shares and invites others

Shared designs and collaborators pull new people in, who start their own designs.[39],[12]

  4. Upgrades for premium features

Heavier users pay for premium content, collaboration, or AI tools.[33]

  5. Spreads inside a company

Individuals and small teams adopt Canva inside large employers without a contract.[39]

  6. Enterprise consolidates usage

Canva shows the company its existing usage and moves it onto one Enterprise account.[24]

01The phases

PrimarySupportingTried, then dropped

  1. 2013 to 2015

Free editor, search pages and word of mouth

Canva launched as a free web editor that charged $1 per premium element. Search landing pages, users blogging and tweeting about it, and a small community team drove the first years, with an embeddable button and a designer marketplace alongside.

    • Product-led

Anyone could design for free and pay $1 per premium element when they published. The team spent months on onboarding, watching the user's emotional journey, and the $1 model grew revenue about 30% month on month for its first two years.[1],[9],[39]

    • Inbound content

The team mapped hundreds of search terms related to Canva to landing pages built around the job the visitor wanted done, each with an easy entry point into the editor. Returns showed within three months, and the co-founder says it is still a massive source of traffic.[39],[9]

    • Community

Users tweeted, blogged and ran their own Canva tutorials and workshops, and a one-person community team worked with bloggers and social media managers. Guy Kawasaki joined as Chief Evangelist and Peg Fitzpatrick as Head of Social Strategy, and by October 2015 users had written 14,560 blog posts and made 19,500 YouTube videos about Canva.[9],[39],[2],[8]

    • Education

Design School launched in November 2014 with a teacher resources portal and lesson plans for classroom use. This was free design education, not free product seats, and Canva said it was already taught in hundreds of schools and universities.[4]

    • Partner channel

The free Canva Button let other sites embed the editor with a few lines of code, with launch partners including GoDaddy, Tailwind and Post Planner. A layout marketplace paid professional designers royalties each time their designs were bought.[3],[5]

  2. 2015 to 2019

Canva for Work and 100 languages

A paid team product launched on top of the free one and quickly passed the $1 element revenue. Canva then translated the product into 100 languages and localised currencies, pricing and templates, and gave nonprofits the paid tier for free.

    • Product-led

Canva for Work, now Canva Pro, launched in August 2015 at $9.95 per user a month while the existing service stayed free. It had a 200,000 person waiting list, and within three months it eclipsed the roughly $2 million of $1 image revenue.[7],[39],[21]

    • Land and expand

The paid plan was aimed at organisations already on the free product: more than 200,000 companies, some with up to 180 employees on Canva, and more than 40% of the Fortune 500.[6]

    • Inbound content

Internationalisation became the other key growth driver: eight languages in one year, then 100 the next, opening markets such as Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia and India. Local currencies, pricing and templates followed in 2019, and Canva says the work includes local SEO pages, not just a translated interface.[39],[21],[28],[10]

    • Community

From October 2015 nonprofits could use the full Canva for Work free of charge, for teams of up to ten people.[8]

  3. 2020 to 2023

    Teams, classrooms and the workplace

Collaboration and work-email team matching turned single users into teams, and team adoption more than quadrupled in a year. Free classroom access scaled through districts and ministries, brand campaigns and Canva Create began, and a first enterprise package did not work.

    • Viral loop

Suggested Teams matched colleagues by work email, and anyone sent a design they could not open could click Request Access. The number of people collaborating on designs doubled between June and December 2020, and the co-founder credits users bringing in new users.[12],[13],[39]

    • Land and expand

Team adoption more than quadrupled in the twelve months to September 2021, helped by a limited pay-for-one, get-four-free Pro offer. In 2022 Canva Teams became the plan for two or more people, with brand controls once limited to Enterprise, and by December 2023 there were 135,000 teams in companies of more than 1,000 employees.[14],[12],[16],[22]

    • Education

Canva for Education is free for K-12 teachers, students, schools, districts and ministries. Los Angeles Unified provisioned every teacher, student and staff member, NSW made it available to all public schools, and by December 2023 more than 60 million students and teachers used it.[17],[22]

    • Paid acquisition

The 2022 brand campaign ran national TV ads, billboards, YouTube, social and audio in the US, with Canada, the UK and Australia to follow. The co-founder says only a minority of traffic comes through marketing or paid channels; no source says how much demand paid media drives.[15],[39]

    • Partner channel

Canva signed 42 partnerships in 18 countries in 2020, including a global preinstall deal with Samsung. In 2023 it opened the Apps SDK with a $50 million developer fund, and developers published 85 apps used 22 million times that year.[13],[19],[22]

    • Owned events

The first Canva Create launched the Visual Suite of Docs, Websites and Whiteboards, and more than 1.5 million people tuned into the 2023 edition.[20],[22]

    • Sales-assist

An enterprise offer launched in late 2019, with a US team for enterprise clients. The co-founder says it made vague promises about large teams and brand consistency, got a little traction, and was not very successful, so Canva rebuilt it.[39],[11]

  4. 2024 to now

Enterprise rebuilt, pro tools and AI distribution

Canva relaunched Enterprise around consolidating usage already inside large companies, added a Business plan, bought Affinity and made it free, and put its editor inside AI assistants. Education reached 100 million monthly users and brand campaigns went local.

    • Sales-assist

Canva Enterprise, from May 2024, targets teams of more than 100 people with a dedicated Customer Success Manager, and invites companies to request a report on their existing Canva usage so it can be consolidated. A Chief Customer Officer runs sales and go-to-market, and the co-founder describes finding one decision maker to put thousands of existing users on one contract.[24],[29],[39]

    • Land and expand

The ladder now runs Free, Pro, Business from October 2025, and Enterprise, which moves users into organisation-managed workspaces. A 2024 Teams price change to US$10 a month per person from three people was eased for early adopters after pushback.[32],[29],[26]

    • Product-led

Canva bought Affinity in 2024 to reach professional designers and made it free in 2025 on its usual rule: free core tools, paid premium content, collaboration and AI. More than one million people signed up in four days.[23],[33]

    • Partner channel

Resellers such as SoftBank and CDW, agencies and consultancies such as Deloitte sell into enterprises, which Canva calls new go-to-market models on top of its product-led roots. Its MCP server puts Canva inside Gemini, Claude, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot.[29],[36],[37]

    • Education

By July 2025, 100 million teachers, students and education leaders used Canva every month, and education ministries in countries including the Philippines, Indonesia and Poland opened it to every public school teacher and student.[30]

    • Paid acquisition

The 2024 campaign ran TV commercials, an email program and airport out-of-home aimed at business commuters, with each ad clicking through to a landing page of curated templates. Canva also ran its first locally made campaigns in the US, UK, India and Japan.[25],[28]

    • Inbound content

The search landing pages remain a massive source of traffic, local SEO pages are part of each market launch, and the Canva AI assistant added 16 languages beyond English in 2025.[39],[28],[31]

    • Owned events

Canva Create drew more than 3,500 people in person and 2.5 million online in 2024, toured in 2025, and Canva expected 6,000 at SoFi Stadium in 2026.[27],[34],[35]

03Myth checks

  • “Canva grew on SEO alone.”

    Not supported

The search landing pages were real and large, and the co-founder calls them a massive driving engine. But he names internationalisation as the other key growth driver and word of mouth as gold, and the CEO lists a valuable free tier and word of mouth among her growth lessons. Team adoption, education and enterprise sales came later.[39],[9],[21]

  • “Canva is for non-designers only.”

    Partly true

True as a founding focus: Canva says its first decade focused heavily on the 99% of knowledge workers without design training. But designers could earn money from layouts and elements from launch, the CEO pointed to thousands of professional brand designers using it in 2022, and Canva bought the professional suite Affinity in 2024 and made it free in 2025.[23],[1],[5],[18],[33]

On the record

  • “It's only a minority that comes through marketing or other paid channels. It's really about Canva users bringing new Canva users into the fold”

Cameron Adams, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, Canva[39]

Answer to "Why do you think on day one it just didn't start to take off?", after the (27:36) launch day chapter

  • “If you can offer a free tier that provides a lot of value it will naturally help your product to spread much more rapidly.”

Melanie Perkins, Co-founder and CEO, Canva[9]

Q16, "What have been your most important lessons in growth?"

  • “we mapped out hundreds of terms that people might search for that were related to Canva. We created landing pages that really spoke to people's jobs to be done”

Cameron Adams, Co-founder and Chief Product Officer, Canva[39]

04What other companies can take from it

  • Turn every search for a design job into a pre-filled editor, not an article.

Works when: The product produces a concrete artifact, such as a poster, invoice, slide deck or contract, that users search for by name in thousands of variants, and a template can be shown on the landing page and opened in one click.

Backfires when: The value is invisible until set-up and data import, as in analytics, security or CRM, so a landing page per keyword is a doorway page with nothing to try.

Based on: Free editor, search pages and word of mouth, Inbound content; Enterprise rebuilt, pro tools and AI distribution, Inbound content

  • Localise the content and the price, not just the interface.

Works when: The buyer is an individual or small business paying personally, so price sensitivity varies by country, and the product's templates and examples carry cultural signals.

Backfires when: The product is sold to global enterprises on one contract in English, where translation spend buys little and regional pricing invites arbitrage.

Based on: Canva for Work and 100 languages, Inbound content

  • Bottom-up adoption does not sell itself to the enterprise; expect to rebuild the package.

Works when: Thousands of employees already use the product on personal or team plans inside large companies, and the buyer wants consolidation, brand control and security more than new features.

Backfires when: There is no installed base to show the buyer, or the product is a single-team tool with no brand-governance or admin story to justify an enterprise tier.

Based on: Teams, classrooms and the workplace, Sales-assist; Enterprise rebuilt, pro tools and AI distribution, Sales-assist

  • A free tier for schools and nonprofits works as a long funnel only if it is the full product.

Works when: Students and staff will carry the habit into jobs where someone else pays, and serving them costs little at the margin.

Backfires when: The product has high per-user compute or support cost, such as heavy AI generation, so free classroom seats become a large cost with no budget line attached.

What changes in the AI era, and what to do now

Analysis by Deepak Gupta. This is opinion built on the sourced record above, not part of it.[37],[36],[40],[39],[33]

Still works

  • The free editor and template engine, now pointed at AI assistants: Canva runs inside ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot, and its COO calls LLMs top of the funnel acquisition platforms.
  • Word of mouth and shared designs, which travel between people rather than through search results (analysis).

Breaks

  • A landing page per search term loses clicks when an AI answer produces the poster or deck itself, so the template page that was the moat in the Google era is easier to bypass (analysis).
  • Free seats for heavy AI generation cost more to serve than free seats for template editing, which strains the free tier and free classroom offer (analysis).

What replaces it

  • Connectors and an MCP server that return an editable, on-brand Canva design inside the assistant, so the conversation ends in Canva's editor.
  • Free professional tools, through Affinity, to reach the designers who set brand systems.
  • Deliberate work on appearing in LLM answers alongside SEO, which the COO describes as the same search-intent playbook Canva ran on Google.

If you are

A seed to Series B self-serve tool whose output is a concrete artifact, sold to individuals and small businesses under $1K ACV, with demand that shows up as searches for that artifact

  1. List the 200 most searched artifact names in your category and ship one landing page per job with a live, editable template above the fold.
  2. Make the free tier produce a finished, shareable artifact, and charge for premium content, brand controls and collaboration.
  3. Rebuild onboarding until a first-time user ships something in under five minutes, watched in user tests.
  4. Publish an MCP server or assistant app that returns an editable artifact in ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, and give assistant referrals their own target.
  5. Translate the top 20 templates for the two largest non-English markets in your traffic, with local pricing, before adding a third language.

You will know it works when: Weekly new activated users, meaning a first artifact exported or shared, by source: search, assistant referral, shared link, direct.

If you are

A product-led company with heavy unmanaged usage inside large companies, such as hundreds of accounts on one email domain, and no enterprise motion yet

  1. Count accounts and paid seats by corporate email domain, and rank the top 100 domains by active users.
  2. Build the admin layer first, with SSO, SCIM, workspace consolidation and brand controls, and give it a named owner before hiring account executives.
  3. Offer each top domain a free usage report and a consolidation proposal aimed at the one buyer who owns brand or IT.
  4. Add a middle plan between individual and enterprise so small teams do not jump straight to a sales call.
  5. Recruit one reseller or consultancy in your largest region once ten enterprise accounts are live.

You will know it works when: Share of the top 100 domains moved onto one contract within two quarters, and net seat growth inside consolidated accounts.
