Developer-led

Developers are the first buyer or user, reached through docs, APIs, and free access.

Counts as evidence: The company names developers as the entry point to accounts.

Who ran it

  • Cursor · Build for ourselves, launch in public · 2022 to 2023

    Developer-led Primary

The founders were the first users, living in the editor full time after about five weeks. Developers are both the entry user and the person who decides to adopt it.

  • Cursor · Word of mouth compounding · 2024 to 2025

    Developer-led Primary

By January 2025 Cursor described itself as used by millions of programmers as their editor of choice.

  • Twilio · Developer-first self-service and pay as you go · 2008 to 2015

    Developer-led Primary

Developers are the entry buyer: they find the APIs, try them, and build them into their own applications. Jeff Lawson describes developers as the route into a market, not the market itself.

  • Twilio · Platform by acquisition and the enterprise push · 2019 to 2021

    Developer-led Primary

The 10-K still says the go-to-market model is primarily focused on reaching and serving developers, through evangelism, education, community events, and SIGNAL.

  • Twilio · Three motions, ISVs, and AI · 2024 to now

    Developer-led Supporting

Developers still enter through the APIs and self-service docs, and Twilio now partners with AI companies that build on its communications capabilities.

  • Datadog · Self-serve monitoring for DevOps teams · 2010 to 2015

    Developer-led Primary

Datadog was built to bring development and operations teams together. The S-1 says the product lands with development and IT operations teams first, then spreads organically to broader teams.

  • Snowflake · Scaling through clouds, partners, and developers · 2021 to 2024

    Developer-led Supporting

Snowpark for Java (2021) and Python (2022), plus the Powered by Snowflake program, extended the platform to developers building applications. The filings do not show developers as the entry buyer.

  • Okta · Platform, land and expand, and the IPO · 2014 to 2017

    Developer-led Supporting

Okta opened its APIs in 2014 so organisations could build customer, supplier and partner apps on it, and the S-1 says it must convince developers to build external portals on the platform. This sat next to workforce identity as a secondary use case.

  • Okta · Auth0, two clouds, and security incidents · 2021 to 2024

    Developer-led Supporting

Okta bought Auth0, a developer-centric identity platform, in a stock deal valued at about $6.5B. The 10-K frames Auth0 as the customizable option for developers, next to Okta's own low-code customer identity.

  • Anthropic · Safety lab ships an API · 2021 to 2023

    Developer-led Primary

Claude launched through an API and developer console after a closed alpha with partners including Notion, Quora, and DuckDuckGo. By July 2023 Anthropic said it was working with thousands of businesses using the Claude API.

  • Anthropic · Self-serve API, two clouds, plans for work · 2024 to 2025

    Developer-led Primary

In March 2024 the API became generally available in 159 countries so developers could sign up and start immediately. In February 2025 Anthropic said Sonnet had been the preferred model for developers since June 2024.

  • Anthropic · Claude Code and the enterprise build-out · 2025 to 2025

    Developer-led Primary

Claude Code began as an internal terminal tool whose first version was built by Boris Cherny, now Head of Claude Code, and he says its use spread quickly inside Anthropic. It was released as a limited research preview in February 2025 and fully launched in May 2025 with VS Code, JetBrains, and GitHub Actions support. Cherny says it was not initially a hit and took many months for users to understand.

  • Stripe · Payments for developers · 2011 to 2015

    Developer-led Primary

The founders framed payments as a code problem. Patrick Collison recalls that Stripe's first website said transactions on the web were a problem rooted in code, not finance.

  • Stripe · Multi-product platform for startups and enterprises · 2023 to now

    Developer-led Supporting

The developer entry point now extends into AI coding tools: claimable sandboxes start a Stripe integration inside tools like Replit and Vercel, and more than 100,000 have been created that way.

  • MongoDB · A free database for developers · 2009 to 2013

    Developer-led Primary

Developers could evaluate the database without asking anyone, which the S-1 credits for its popularity and for driving enterprise adoption of the paid subscription. Ittycheria: the business starts and stops with developers.

  • MongoDB · Atlas becomes the business, sold with the clouds · 2019 to now

    Developer-led Supporting

The AI-era developer entry: an Atlas Managed MCP Server that connects coding agents to live Atlas data, and Voyage AI embedding and reranking models, acquired in 2025.

  • GitLab · Open core and buyer-based tiers · 2015 to 2019

    Developer-led Primary

  • GitLab · AI agents and hybrid pricing · 2024 to now

    Developer-led Supporting

The 10-K names two entry points: bottom-up adoption by developers and top-down buying by executives.

  • Cloudflare · Enterprise sales layered on self-serve · 2016 to 2019

    Developer-led Supporting

The S-1 says developers at large companies use the free plan for hobby projects and then take Cloudflare to work, which it says lowers acquisition cost.

  • Cloudflare · Developer platform on the network · 2017 to 2024

    Developer-led Primary

Workers let developers run JavaScript on Cloudflare's servers, launched as a paid add-on in 2018, and opened what the S-1 calls an entirely new market in compute and storage. Prince says the company built it because it needed it itself.

  • Cloudflare · Contracted customers, channel and agents · 2025 to now

    Developer-led Supporting

Prince reports developers on the platform alongside paying and large customers as a growth headline, without giving a developer count.

  • Vercel · Deploy tool plus an open-source framework · 2016 to 2019

  • OpenAI · API first, behind a waitlist · 2020 to 2022

    Developer-led Primary

The API launched in private beta with a mandatory production review before applications went live, and OpenAI said commercial products would help fund its research. In November 2021 developers in supported countries could sign up directly, and OpenAI said tens of thousands were already building on it.
