Alphabet Q3 2026: Search Ad Growth Slowed, Queries Did Not
Google ad revenue grew 10.6% to $82.0B in Q3 2026, yet Search was flat on Q2 as queries hit a five-year growth high. What it means for AEO, GEO and Gemini.

Google's advertising revenue did not dip in the third quarter of 2026. It grew 10.6% year over year to $82.0 billion, but growth slowed from 14.4% in Q2. Search & other revenue was flat quarter over quarter at $63.4 billion, even as Alphabet said Search queries grew at their fastest rate in five years.
That gap, more questions and roughly the same Search revenue as the quarter before, is the most useful thing in the report for anyone who works on AEO (answer engine optimization) or GEO (generative engine optimization). It is also where Google itself pointed when explaining the slowdown. Every figure below comes from Alphabet's Q3 2026 earnings release, its Form 10-Q and the October 28 earnings call.
The numbers
| Line (Q3 2026) | Revenue | Year over year | Q2 2026 growth |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google Search & other | $63.35B | +12.0% | +16.8% |
| YouTube ads | $11.21B | +9.2% | +12.9% |
| Google Network | $7.46B | +1.4% | −0.7% |
| Total Google advertising | $82.01B | +10.6% | +14.4% |
| Google Cloud | $30.71B | +103% | +82% |
| Alphabet total | $127.58B | +25% | +24% |
| Capital expenditures | $51.36B | +114% | n/a |
Q2 growth rates are calculated from Alphabet's Q2 2026 release. Sequentially, Search moved from $63.27 billion in Q2 to $63.35 billion in Q3, a gain of about 0.1%. A year earlier the same Q2 to Q3 step added 4.4%. Total advertising rose 0.5% from Q2.
Three other numbers from the 10-Q matter here. Paid clicks on Google properties rose 8% year over year, below the 11% average for the first nine months of 2026. Cost per click rose 4%. On the Network side, impressions fell 14%, and the 10-Q attributes the nine-month Network decline to lower AdSense revenue.
Elsewhere, Cloud doubled and its operating income rose from $3.6 billion to $11.1 billion. Capex of $51.4 billion pushed free cash flow to negative $9.1 billion, the second straight negative quarter. The 10-Q also shows Alphabet raised $12.4 billion through its at-the-market stock program and $28.7 billion in senior notes during the quarter.
Why Search slowed, in Google's words
On the call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler named foreign exchange as "the single largest driver of Search deceleration relative to Q2". He also cited retail advertisers in Asia Pacific hit by the EU ending its de minimis exemption, and media spend normalizing after a World Cup-driven Q2, according to the call transcript.
The fourth reason is the one I care about. Schindler said "the strong growth in AI Mode queries had an impact because of the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode". CFO Anat Ashkenazi added that Search is now lapping the acceleration that began in 2025 and expects a few more points of that pressure in Q4.
My read: FX and the World Cup are noise that washes out in a year. The AI Mode monetization gap is structural, and Google said so on its own earnings call. More queries are moving to a surface where Google does not yet earn what it earns on a results page.
What it means for search traffic
Put the disclosed numbers side by side. Queries are growing at a five-year high. Paid clicks grew 8%. Sundar Pichai said AI Mode queries are on average three times longer than traditional searches, and that one in five AI Mode searches uses voice, images or documents.
Alphabet does not report organic clicks, so nobody outside Google can measure how much traffic left the open web this quarter. What I think the numbers support is narrower. Each query is producing fewer ad clicks than it used to, and the queries are getting longer and more conversational. If paid clicks per query are falling on Google's own pages, I would not assume organic clicks per query are holding up better.
The Network line is the other tell. AdSense pays publishers to show Google ads on their own sites. Its revenue fell over nine months while Search queries rose. That is consistent with fewer visits reaching third-party pages, though the 10-Q does not say why AdSense declined.
What it means for AEO and GEO in B2B
For a B2B company, the practical shift is that the answer itself is becoming the place where you are evaluated. Google confirmed it is "now scaling high-quality ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries," and it announced AI Mode ads in more countries plus multi-turn ads in the US. Schindler also said click-through rates are already similar between sponsored and organic product listings inside AI Mode.
That last point deserves attention. It means the paid and organic slots inside an AI answer are starting to perform alike for shoppers. For B2B buyers there is no equivalent disclosure yet. But the direction is clear: the answer box will carry both earned citations and bought placements, and they will compete for the same attention. I worked through how to split budget between the two in AI ads vs organic citation.
Three implications I would plan around:
- Long questions reward specific pages. A query three times longer than a keyword is usually a buying question with constraints in it. Pages that answer one question completely, with the numbers and the conditions, get quoted. Category pages written for a two-word keyword do not.
- The market will not be sized for you. Investor decks will cite this quarter as proof that GEO is huge. I have argued that nobody knows how big GEO is, and one earnings report does not change that. What it does is give you a reason to measure your own share of answers.
- Google is one engine among several. The Gemini app now reports one billion users, and AI Mode lives inside Search. Track them separately. The GEO Compass profiles the answer engines and how each one sources and cites.
Where Gemini is going
Pichai said the Gemini app reached one billion users, up from 950 million monthly active users reported for Q2, and called it the fastest-growing product in Google's history. First-party model APIs now process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, up from 22 billion a quarter earlier and more than four times the level a year ago. The release names Gemini 4 Argon and Carbon as the current frontier models.
The money tells a clearer story than the user counts. Cloud revenue grew 103%, and the release credits enterprise AI infrastructure, enterprise AI solutions and TPU system sales. Alphabet kept its 2026 capex guidance at $195 billion to $205 billion and said capex will "increase significantly in 2027". Free cash flow has been negative for two quarters, and the gap is being funded with stock and debt.
My read: today Gemini earns its keep through Cloud, by selling the compute and the models to other companies. The consumer side, Gemini app and AI Mode, is still being built for usage first and revenue second. That order matters for marketers. Once Google needs AI Mode to monetize like classic Search, ad density inside answers will rise, and organic visibility inside those answers gets more expensive to hold.
What I'd watch next quarter: AI Mode monetization commentary, whether paid click growth keeps falling while queries rise, and whether the Gemini app gets an ad product. Pichai also said Google will bring agent-like task experiences to consumers later this year. An answer that completes a task leaves even less reason to click.
What I would do now
- Write down your 25 buying questions. Use the full sentences buyers type, not keywords. Run them monthly in AI Mode, AI Overviews, Gemini and ChatGPT, and record who gets cited. The four free GEO tools workflow covers the audit, schema and tracking steps.
- Rebuild the five pages that should answer those questions. Put the answer in the first two sentences, then the specifics: prices, limits, integrations, compliance scope.
- Change the report, not just the content. Add citation share and branded search volume next to organic clicks. A flat click line can hide a rising answer presence, or a falling one.
- Run a small paid test inside AI answers when it reaches your market. Keep it small and measured against organic citations for the same questions. Do not move the whole search budget on one quarter of data.
- Make documents and images readable. One in five AI Mode searches uses voice, images or files. Product sheets locked in image-only PDFs are invisible to that fifth.
Alphabet's own guidance says Search growth will be under more pressure in Q4. If you rely on Google for pipeline, that is the quarter to have your answer tracking in place.
Frequently Asked Questions
Did Google's ad revenue decline in Q3 2026?
No. Google advertising revenue grew 10.6% year over year to $82.0 billion and rose 0.5% from Q2. What declined was the growth rate, from 14.4% in Q2. Search & other grew 12.0% to $63.35 billion but was nearly flat quarter over quarter, and YouTube ads growth slowed to 9.2%.
Why did Google Search revenue growth slow in Q3 2026?
Google named four causes on its October 28 call. Foreign exchange was the largest. The others were Asia Pacific retail advertisers hit by the EU ending its de minimis exemption, media spend normalizing after a World Cup-driven Q2, and lower monetization of fast-growing AI Mode queries.
How many people use Gemini?
Alphabet said the Gemini app reached one billion users in Q3 2026, up from 950 million monthly active users reported for Q2. Its first-party model APIs process nearly 32 billion tokens per minute, more than four times the volume of a year earlier.
What do Alphabet's Q3 2026 results mean for AEO and GEO?
Search queries grew at a five-year high while paid clicks grew 8% and AI Mode queries ran three times longer than classic searches. More buyer research is happening inside AI answers, and Google is adding ads there. Companies should track their citations in those answers, not only their organic clicks.
Is Google putting ads in AI Mode and AI Overviews?
Yes. On the Q3 2026 call, Google said it is scaling ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries, expanding AI Mode ads to international markets and adding multi-turn ads in AI Mode in the US.
