ChatGPT Hit One-Fifth of Google's Search Volume. What Changes for B2B

OpenAI says ChatGPT handles about a fifth of Google's search volume, and Google is scaling ads inside AI answers. What both mean for how B2B buyers find vendors.

ChatGPT Hit One-Fifth of Google's Search Volume. What Changes for B2B, by Deepak Gupta on guptadeepak.com

OpenAI says ChatGPT now handles about one-fifth as many searches as Google. Five days earlier, Google told investors it is putting more ads inside its AI answers, because AI Mode earns less than classic search. Neither number is clean. Read together, they say AI search has stopped being a side channel for B2B discovery and is starting to carry ads like any mature channel.

Key Facts

  • The claim: Adam Fry, who leads ChatGPT's consumer product, said ChatGPT's search volume is "roughly one-fifth (20%) of the volume of queries of Google," as reported by 9to5Google on November 3. He spoke at an OpenAI press event the day before.
  • The caveat: OpenAI counts a search every time a prompt sends ChatGPT to the web. It did not say what Google figure it compared against. The number is self-reported and not independently verified.
  • Google's move: On the October 28 earnings call, chief business officer Philipp Schindler said Google is "now scaling high-quality ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries," according to the call transcript.
  • The money signal: Search revenue grew 12% year over year, down from roughly 17% in Q2. Schindler cited "the lower monetization we were seeing in AI Mode" as one of four reasons.

Two numbers, one direction

On November 2, OpenAI put ChatGPT's search volume at about one-fifth of Google's. On October 28, Google said it is scaling ads inside its AI answers after AI Mode queries earned less than classic search.

Neither number is perfect. OpenAI's figure is self-reported, uses a loose definition of "search," and does not say how it estimated Google's volume. Google's statement describes a direction, not a result.

The direction is still clear. AI search is no longer an experiment you fund when budget is left over. A large share of discovery now happens there, and it is starting to carry ads.

First, the honest caveats

The 20% figure deserves skepticism before anyone quotes it as market share.

  • It counts differently. OpenAI counts a search whenever a prompt causes ChatGPT to search the web. One Google session often holds several queries, and one ChatGPT conversation can trigger several searches. These are not like-for-like units.
  • The denominator is unknown. OpenAI did not say which Google volume it compared against.
  • It is self-interested. A company that sells ads has every reason to present its reach generously.

So treat "20%" as "large and growing," not as a precise share. The trend line matters more than the exact number, and Google's own disclosures point the same way. I covered those in detail in my read of Alphabet's Q3 2026 results: queries grew at a five-year high while Search revenue was flat on the prior quarter.

Why B2B should care more than anyone

Consumer search gets the headlines. B2B buying is where AI search changes the most.

Forrester reported in January that 94% of business buyers now use AI in their buying process. Twice as many buyers named generative AI or conversational search a more meaningful source than any other, ahead of vendor websites, product experts and sales.

Business purchases are research-heavy and comparative. "Which SIEM works best for a 500-person healthcare company on Microsoft 365?" is exactly the question AI engines answer well. It used to send a buyer through ten Google results and three analyst reports.

When that question gets answered in a chat window, the shortlist forms before anyone visits your website. I made the longer version of this argument in AI search is becoming the default for B2B discovery.

ChatGPT is not just big. It cites differently

If ChatGPT handles a large share of research queries, how it picks sources matters. Data from GrackerAI, my company, shows it behaves differently from Google's AI surfaces.

GrackerAI published eight AI search visibility benchmarks between August and October 2026, covering 1.74 million AI answers about security products:

  • ChatGPT leans heavily on vendor websites. In the SIEM benchmark, vendors' own sites supplied 94.9% of ChatGPT's citations, against 30.5% for Google AI Overview. In access management and SSO, it was 82.4% against 14.1%.
  • ChatGPT cites far more than anyone else in some categories. It produced nearly 60% of all citations in the password management benchmark and about half in bot management and compliance automation.
  • Engines barely share sources. In the benchmarks that report a maximum, no two engines overlapped by more than 0.29 on the cited domains (a Jaccard score, where 1 means identical lists).

The practical meaning: ranking on Google, even inside Google's AI surfaces, does not make you visible in ChatGPT. If ChatGPT is anywhere near a fifth of Google's volume, being invisible there is no longer a small gap. The GEO Compass engine profiles show how each engine sources and cites.

The ads are coming, and that changes the game

Google's second disclosure matters just as much.

Search revenue growth slowed to 12% from roughly 17% the quarter before. Schindler named foreign exchange as the single largest driver, and AI Mode's lower monetization as another. Google's response is to scale ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode, expand AI Mode ads into international markets, and run "multi-turn ads in the U.S.," meaning ads alongside follow-up questions.

Schindler also said click-through rates are "already similar between sponsored and organic product list items within AI Mode." That is a shopping data point, and there is no B2B equivalent yet.

OpenAI is moving the same way. Fry said most people do not seem to mind ads in ChatGPT and that OpenAI "could be doing this more, actually," according to 9to5Google's account of The Verge's reporting.

My read (analysis): we are about to replay the history of Google search, compressed into a few years. Early on, organic visibility is cheap and decisive. Then paid placement arrives, competition for the top answer intensifies, and organic visibility gets harder and more valuable at once.

Companies that build organic AI visibility now, before ad auctions crowd the answers, will hold an advantage. Companies that wait will pay for every placement. I worked through how to split that budget in AI ads vs organic citation.

What B2B teams should do this quarter

  1. Measure ChatGPT separately. A single blended "AI visibility" score hides the engine with the biggest citation footprint in many categories. Track presence, position and citations on ChatGPT on their own.
  2. Make your own site citable. ChatGPT relies heavily on vendor sites in many categories, so product pages, documentation, integration pages and comparison pages feed its answers directly. Make them specific, current and structured.
  3. Earn third-party coverage for Google too. Google AI Overview leans far less on vendor sites, so reviews, analyst coverage and community discussion carry more weight there.
  4. Learn the paid formats now. Understand how ads in AI Overviews, AI Mode and ChatGPT work before competitors do. Then decide where paid presence makes sense next to organic.
  5. Watch first-mention position, not just mentions. In the password management benchmark, Bitwarden was mentioned most but 1Password was named first. The most-mentioned vendor is not always the one buyers see first.

The bottom line

The 20% number is fuzzy. The trend is not.

AI engines are absorbing a meaningful share of the research that used to happen on Google. The business model that turned Google search into a crowded auction is now arriving inside AI answers.

For B2B companies, the window where organic AI visibility is both cheap and decisive is open right now. In my view it will not stay open long. If you want the wider data set, the state of AI search in 2026 collects 50 sourced statistics.

FAQ

How big is ChatGPT search compared with Google?

In November 2026, ChatGPT consumer product lead Adam Fry said ChatGPT's search volume is roughly one-fifth (20%) of Google's query volume. OpenAI counts a search whenever a prompt triggers a web search and did not say how it estimated Google's volume. Treat the figure as self-reported, not a measured market share.

Is Google showing ads in AI Overviews and AI Mode?

Yes. On its October 28, 2026 earnings call, Google said it is scaling ads within AI Overviews and AI Mode to more users and queries. It also announced AI Mode ads in international markets and multi-turn ads in the US, which appear alongside follow-up questions.

Why did Google's search revenue growth slow?

Search revenue grew 12% year over year in Q3 2026, down from roughly 17% in Q2. Google named foreign exchange as the largest driver. It also cited Asia Pacific retail advertisers, a World Cup comparison, and lower monetization in AI Mode.

Does ranking well on Google make a company visible in ChatGPT?

Not necessarily. GrackerAI benchmarks covering 1.74 million AI answers found low overlap in the domains different engines cite. ChatGPT also relies far more on vendor websites than Google AI Overview does. Visibility has to be measured and earned on each engine separately.
