Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews is the SERP-integrated answer block Google began rolling out in 2024 (formerly 'Search Generative Experience' or SGE). It appears at the top of search results for queries Google judges to benefit from an assembled answer, with links to supporting sources. Google states that no special schema or AI text files are needed to appear, and that AI feature traffic is counted under 'Web' in Search Console. It is the most consequential AEO surface for sites that already rank well in traditional Google search.
Grounding model
Integrated with Google's search systems. Google documents query fan-out: related searches across subtopics and data sources are run to find supporting pages. In our observation, cited pages are often ones that already rank well organically, but Google does not publish a rank cutoff.
Citation style
Links to supporting pages shown within and beside the AI Overview block. The exact layout varies by query and device.
What it rewards
- Existing strong Google organic presence
- Directly answerable, definitional first paragraphs that can be extracted cleanly
- Structured data that matches visible content (general hygiene, not a documented AI Overviews lever)
- Clear semantic HTML and heading hierarchy so the relevant passage is easy to locate
What it penalizes
- Content that buries the answer in preamble or behind irrelevant context
- Sites demoted by Google's classical quality systems
- Pages not eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet (nosnippet and noindex controls apply)
