Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews is the SERP-integrated answer block Google began rolling out in 2024 (formerly 'Search Generative Experience' or SGE). It appears at the top of search results for queries Google judges to benefit from an assembled answer, citing 3-10 sources. AI Overviews is the most consequential AEO surface for sites that already rank well in traditional Google search.
Grounding model
Tightly integrated with Google's classical search ranking: sources cited in AI Overviews are typically pages already ranking in the top 10 organic results for the query. The selection layer adds extractability, factual confidence, and freshness on top of organic ranking.
Citation style
Inline source chips beneath claims within the AI Overview block. Each chip shows favicon + domain. Tap-through opens the source. Some queries also surface a side panel of additional sources beneath the overview.
What it rewards
- Existing strong Google organic ranking (AI Overviews citations correlate heavily with organic top-10 presence)
- Directly answerable, definitional first paragraphs the AI Overview extraction can pull cleanly
- Schema.org structured data (FAQ, HowTo, Article) that traditional SERP features have rewarded for years
- Clear semantic HTML and heading hierarchy so the model can locate the relevant passage
What it penalizes
- Pages outside the top 20 organic results (selection at this layer is biased toward already-ranking sources)
- Content that buries the answer in preamble or behind irrelevant context
- Sites that have been demoted by Google's classical quality systems
