Technology Rewired: Education
Education software moved from on-prem student records and classroom software to cloud learning management systems and online courses. AI brought tutoring chatbots and writing tools, and cheating concerns. Agents now tutor, generate practice, and help with grading and admin, while teachers keep responsibility for assessment, care, and student relationships.
The shift: Every student gets a tutor; teachers shift to coaching and assessment design.

How has the education team changed across five eras?
Era 1 · On-prem
Before 2005
0.1Schools ran on paper gradebooks, on-prem student information systems, and computer labs with installed software. Teachers planned, taught, and graded everything themselves.
Era 2 · SaaS and cloud
2005 to 2020
0.7Cloud LMS platforms, online courses, and school-issued devices moved assignments and grades online. Instructional designers and ed tech coordinators became common roles, and student data became a breach target, as the Canvas breach showed.
Era 3 · AI-assisted
2020 to 2024
1.4Generative AI arrived in classrooms as a tutor and a shortcut at once. Schools wrote policies on use, and detection tools proved unreliable.
Era 4 · Agentic
2024 onward
1.8Tutoring agents now explain, quiz, and adapt practice to each student, and teacher-side agents draft lesson materials, feedback, and admin paperwork. Whether students should still learn to code is a live question, which I take up in programming in 2026.
Era 5 · Next 5 years
2026 to 2031
2.7My bet: every student has access to a capable tutor, and teaching shifts toward coaching, discussion, and assessment that agents cannot complete for the student. Privacy rules for minors keep autonomy in schools lower than in corporate training.
