03How long it takes
Published by the platform
A normal reset takes a few minutes. Apple says account recovery can take several days or longer, for security reasons. Apple Support cannot shorten the wait. You should get a confirmation email within 72 hours that gives a date and time when you can expect to get back in.
While you wait
- If you started recovery on the web, turn off your Apple devices during the wait.
- Do not sign in or use a signed-in device. That can cancel the request.
- Do not submit a new request. Apple says it may extend the wait.
- When the wait ends, follow Apple's email or text. If nothing arrives, go to apple.com/recover after the time in your confirmation email.
04Warn your contacts
Send this from another account or by text, so nobody falls for messages sent in your name.
I'm locked out of my Apple Account while I reset it, so iMessage and FaceTime may not reach me. If someone messages as me asking for codes or money, it isn't me.
05Watch out for recovery scams
People who just lost an account are the main target of fake helpers. Only Apple Account and iCloud's own app or website can restore your account.
- Emails that look like Apple or iCloud asking you to sign in to fix your account. Apple never asks you to log in to a website for verification. Forward them to reportphishing@apple.com. How it works
- Calls from "Apple Support" about a problem with your account. Apple says to just hang up on unsolicited calls, and that scammers can fake Apple's caller ID. How it works
- "Recovery experts" who say they can unlock an Apple Account or skip the account recovery wait. Apple says Apple Support cannot shorten the wait, so no one else can either. How it works
06Once you're back in: lock it down
07How it probably happened
- Most likely
A password you don't use often, or one you changed and didn't save.
- Also common
A "reset your password" email or text that was really phishing.
How this scam works - Less common
Someone asked you for a code "sent by mistake".

09Questions people ask
What is a trusted device?
An iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple Vision Pro or Mac that is already signed in to your Apple Account with two-factor authentication.
How long does account recovery take?
Apple says several days or more, for security reasons, and that Apple Support cannot speed it up. Your confirmation email gives the expected date and time.
What cancels account recovery?
Signing in with your password, changing the password on a signed-in device, or using a device that is signed in to your account.
Can a recovery contact see my account?
No. Apple says a recovery contact cannot access your account. They can only get a code that helps you reset your password.
I set up a recovery key and lost it. What now?
Apple says a recovery key turns off standard account recovery. Apple cannot give you a lost key, and without it you can be locked out for good.
