What happened
The European Commission found that AliExpress fell short of its duty to diligently assess the risk of illegal, unsafe and counterfeit products spreading on its marketplace, and failed to take effective measures to reduce that risk. It is the largest fine issued under the Digital Services Act so far.
How it affected users
Shoppers in the EU were exposed to illegal, unsafe and counterfeit goods that the platform had not adequately assessed or acted against. The Commission ordered AliExpress to take action and said it may impose periodic penalty payments if it does not comply.
