Topical authority

Topical authority is what happens when an entity is recognised as the go-to source for a defined topic: not just because it has one good page, but because it has comprehensive, dated, internally-linked coverage of the topic across many pages, and external signals (mentions, citations, links) confirm the recognition.

Building topical authority is a structural-content programme, not a single-page tactic. The components:

• A topic-defining pillar page. A long-form definitional explainer that establishes the boundaries of the topic ("what is X, what's inside vs outside the category").
• Subtopic deep dives. 10-30 supporting pages covering specific aspects of the topic in depth, each linked to the pillar and to relevant siblings.
• Glossary, FAQ, comparison content. Reference content that demonstrates breadth as well as depth.
• Internal linking that maps the topic. Editorial links between pages on the topic, in context. Not navigation links; links that say "here's how this concept relates to that concept."
• Dating discipline. Every page dated, refreshed when material changes; methodology disclosed.
• External validation. Mentions, citations, links from other recognised authorities in the topic. Cultivated through original research, primary-source rigor, and being the publishable source on niche aspects of the topic.

For AEO and GEO, topical authority correlates strongly with citation share. AI engines that have learned to recognise an entity as a topic authority will retrieve from it preferentially for queries inside that topic. The entity SEO entry covers the entity-graph side; topical authority covers the content-coverage side. Both run together in mature programmes.
