Citation share
Also known as: AI citation share, share of voice (AI)
The GEO equivalent of organic share of voice: the percentage of AI engine answers in a query set that cite your domain. The primary KPI for measuring AI visibility programs.
Citation share is to GEO what organic share of voice is to SEO. The calculation: across a defined query set, what percentage of AI engine answers cite your domain (or specific pages within it). Measured per engine and aggregated across engines for an overall AI visibility metric.
The mechanics of measurement are the active research area in 2026. The leading approaches: (a) automated query runners that ask the major AI engines a defined query set on a recurring schedule and parse the citation panels; (b) sampling-based studies that human-grade citation behavior on a smaller query set; (c) panel-based approaches that survey actual user query distributions to weight measurement toward queries that matter to actual buyers.
The category of vendors competing on this measurement layer is growing fast: Profound, AthenaHQ, Otterly, Trakkr, RankScale, BrightEdge GenerativeAI, Conductor AI Visibility, semrush AI, ahrefs Brand Radar, and the author's own GrackerAI are all in this space. Methodologies differ enough that citation-share numbers from different vendors are not directly comparable. Pick one methodology, run it consistently, and treat the trend more than the absolute number.
Most mature GEO programs measure citation share weekly, segmented by engine, query category, and competitor set. The trend over time is what informs content strategy, not the snapshot.
