Ogoshi brothers sentenced for sextortion of teenage boys, 2024

Samuel Ogoshi and Samson Ogoshi, brothers, were each sentenced in the Western District of Michigan to 210 months in prison after pleading guilty to conspiracy to sexually exploit minors. The indictment alleged that the defendants posed as young women on social media, got teenage boys to send sexually explicit images, then blackmailed them for money by threatening to send the images to their families, friends and classmates. It also alleged that Samuel Ogoshi, using an Instagram persona, did this to a 17-year-old in Michigan who died by suicide in March 2022; his judgment records that count as dismissed on the government's motion.

1. 2022-03-25 A 17-year-old in Michigan dies by suicide after being blackmailed over an image, as the indictment alleges.
2. 2022-11-30 A grand jury indicts the two brothers and a third defendant on charges including sexual exploitation of a minor and conspiracies to sexually exploit minors, distribute child sexual abuse material and commit cyberstalking.
3. 2023-08-12 After extradition to the United States, Samson Ogoshi arrives in the Western District of Michigan; Samuel Ogoshi is also extradited.
4. 2024-04-10 Both brothers plead guilty to conspiracy to sexually exploit minors.
5. 2024-09-05 Each brother is sentenced to 210 months in prison.

Lessons

• Tell teenagers that sextortion is a crime against them, that it is never their fault, and that they can come to you without being punished.
• If a young person is being threatened, stop replying, do not pay, keep the messages, and report to the FBI or the NCMEC CyberTipline.
• Treat a new online contact who quickly moves to sexual requests as a likely extortion attempt, even when the profile looks like a real young woman.
