Citation Share

Also known as: AI citation share, share of citations

Citation share is the proportion of AI-generated answers, across a fixed prompt set, that cite your domain as a source; it is the closest substitute for rank tracking on surfaces that have no position to track.

How it works

Citation share is the proportion of AI-generated answers, for a defined set of prompts, that cite your domain as a source. You fix a prompt set representing how buyers actually ask about your category, run it across the engines that matter to you on a schedule, and record which domains appear in each answer's source list. Your share is your appearances divided by total answers, and it is only interpretable against the same prompt set over time.

When it matters

It matters as the closest available substitute for rank tracking on AI surfaces, where there is no position to track and no impression count to read. It is the metric that tells you whether GEO work is doing anything. Two properties make it harder than it looks: answers are non-deterministic, so a single run is noise and you need repeated sampling; and the prompt set is the measurement instrument, so changing it resets your baseline. See What Is GEO and AI Visibility Audit.

Common misconceptions

  • "It is a single number for the brand." It is a number for a prompt set. Different prompt sets produce different shares, and a share quoted without its prompt set means nothing.
  • "One run is a measurement." Model outputs vary between runs. Without repeated sampling you are reporting variance.
  • "High citation share means traffic." Being cited and being clicked are different outcomes. Track them separately or you will misread a zero-click win as a failure.
