People Also Ask (PAA)

Also known as: PAA, Related questions

A SERP feature showing expandable related questions beneath the initial result, each revealing an extracted answer when clicked. A high-volume AEO surface that's easier to win than featured snippets.

People Also Ask boxes appear on a majority of informational Google SERPs in 2026. The mechanic: 3-5 related questions are shown beneath the initial results; clicking one expands to reveal an extracted answer with a "from [domain]" attribution. Expanding one PAA question often inserts more PAA questions, creating an effectively infinite expansion tree.

For AEO, PAA is high-leverage. The bar is lower than for featured snippets: Google extracts PAA answers from a broader set of candidate pages, not just the top organic result. A page ranking on page 2 can win PAA placements for related questions, driving visibility above its organic rank.

Tactical patterns that win PAA:

  • Question-shaped H2 or H3 headings with the answer in the immediately-following paragraph (40-80 words, complete sentence, no preamble).
  • FAQ sections with FAQPage schema: marked up cleanly, only on genuinely Q&A content (stuffed FAQ schema is now actively devalued).
  • Coverage of variant phrasings of the same question. Different users phrase the same intent differently and PAA pulls from the closest matching phrasing.

PAA-winning content overlaps heavily with AI Overview citation content. The same passages that get extracted into PAA are statistically more likely to be cited in AI Overviews, making PAA optimisation a useful AEO entry point.
