Perplexity is a search-first AI engine: answers are grounded against retrieved sources by default, with a citation-forward UI. Users can choose among models from several providers, including GPT and Claude. Many SEO teams read it as a leading indicator of GEO signal.
Grounding model
Always-on retrieval against Perplexity's web index plus optional vertical sources (academic, finance, etc.). Highly extractive: the answer is typically a stitch of quoted sentences from the cited sources. Perplexity documents that PerplexityBot is not used for training; Perplexity-User fetches pages on behalf of users and generally ignores robots.txt.
Citation style
Numbered chips inline with the answer text, plus a 'Sources' list with title and domain. Click-through is one tap.
What it rewards

- Generic SEO content with no novel claims (in our observation, passed over for more specific sources)
