You lose on-prem. You gain attestations and FGA.

Best for: Teams that inherited Keycloak and never wanted to be identity operators.
Watch out for: At 1M MAU the Auth0 invoice can exceed Keycloak ops. Model both.

You want Kratos/Hydra/Keto, not a monolith.

Ory wins if you will assemble identity from parts and staff it.

More moving pieces than FusionAuth. More OSS purity than FusionAuth.

Best for: Teams that outgrew Keycloak's monolith and still will not buy SaaS.
Watch out for: You still own operations. This is not an easier Keycloak.

Entra External ID

Microsoft shop

The rest of the org standardized on Entra.

Entra wins when sovereignty was never the reason you ran Keycloak, Microsoft was the rest of the stack.

FedRAMP High. Frozen B2C is not this product. P1 B2C stays until at least 2030.

Best for: Public sector and enterprises already on Azure.
Watch out for: DX still trails. Do not pick Entra to get Keycloak velocity.

How to choose

If you still need on-prem and lighter ops, FusionAuth, unless OSI is a hard gate.
If you are done running an IdP, Auth0, or Entra if you are a Microsoft shop.

FAQ

What is the best alternative to Keycloak?: FusionAuth for lighter self-host. Auth0 if you will buy. Zitadel or Ory if you stay open source and want a different runtime. Stay if Apache 2.0 on-prem is the requirement.
Is FusionAuth a drop-in Keycloak replacement?: No. APIs and admin models differ. Themes and SPIs do not port. Plan a migration, not a binary swap.
Is Keycloak really free?: The license is. Operations are not. Compass models about $5,000/month at 1M MAU in infra and time. Compare that to Auth0 at about $9,500 before you assume SaaS is more expensive.
